The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.

If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
