Truce Deal Brings Respite to Gaza, However Concerns Remain Over Future

On Thursday morning, people witnessed little joy in Gaza. Reports of the pending peace agreement had circulated quickly over the battered land throughout the evening, accompanied by sporadic gunfire discharged heavenward as a form of jubilation, however when daybreak appeared the sentiment shifted to apprehensive waiting.

“People remain frightened,” stated a young woman in her twenties in al-Mawasi, the densely populated and impoverished coastal belt where much of the population have taken refuge under temporary shelters and vinyl dwellings.

“We anticipate an official announcement and real guarantees regarding access points, enabling sustenance supplies, and ceasing the bloodshed, destruction and forced relocations.”

Nearby, Abbas Hassouna, 64 said he and his family were anticipating a verified communication and solid commitments for opening the crossings, bringing in food, and ending the fatalities, demolition and exile”.

“After witnessing these changes, only then will we truly believe them. Yet at this moment, anxiety continues. They could backtrack suddenly or violate the accord like previous instances and we will remain amid the continuous pattern with nothing changing only additional hardship,” said Hassouna, originally from Gaza’s northern sector though he has faced expulsion repeatedly.

Mixed Emotions Throughout Residents

Ola al-Nazli, 47 explained she heard of the ceasefire from her neighbours in al-Mawasi. “I felt confused about my emotions, whether to be happy or mournful. We’ve encountered similar situations repeatedly in the past, and each time we faced disillusionment anew, so this time anxiety and prudence are stronger than ever,” Nazli stated, who was forced to leave her home in Gaza City by the recent Israeli offensive in that area.

“Everyone lives in temporary shelters that do not protect against low temperatures or amid explosions. Individuals with savings or occupations were stripped of all assets. Consequently our relief is accompanied by suffering and anxiety. My sole wish that we might exist protected, away from detonations, not having to relocate, and that border passages will be accessible quickly,” Nazli concluded.

Relief Arrangements Ongoing

Humanitarian organizations stated they were organizing to inundate Gaza with nourishment and necessary items. The detailed strategy includes provisions for a surge of humanitarian assistance. The World Health Organization chief, the WHO director, stated the organization stood ready to “scale up its work to respond to urgent healthcare demands of patients across Gaza, and facilitate reconstruction of the ruined healthcare network”.

The UN agency dedicated to refugee assistance, welcomed the deal as major respite, and mentioned it had enough food stockpiled beyond the territory to provide for the devastated territory’s 2.3m population for the coming three months. While increased support has entered the territory over past weeks, supplies continue to be grossly insufficient, humanitarian workers said.

Optimism and Worry Within Displaced Families

Jihad al-Hilu heard the news about the peace agreement through a wireless receiver while residing in his temporary dwelling located in the al-Mawasi area. “In that instant, I experienced a combination of elation and respite, similar to a spark of hope had returned to my heart after a long wait. We were longing for this moment, for killings to end and for the atrocities that have destroyed numerous families to finish,” Hilu in his thirties shared.

“At the same time, exists significant apprehension that lives within us. We worry that this peace arrangement could be short-lived and that hostilities may restart similar to previous occasions.”

There are also general worries regarding what tranquility could deliver to the territory, in which over ninety percent of residences have been damaged or demolished, almost all infrastructure obliterated and where many people goes hungry every day. Over sixty-seven thousand Palestinians mostly civilians have perished by the Israeli offensive initiated following the militant attack during late 2023, that resulted in 1,200 deaths similarly mainly ordinary people with 251 individuals captured by combatants.

“My primary concern above all else is the deficiency of protection. Starvation is tolerable, however danger is the real disaster. I fear that Gaza could turn into a zone of turmoil dominated by militias and armed factions instead of law and order.”

Present Conditions

Observers reported armed units launched projectiles to prevent Palestinians returning to northern parts of Gaza early Thursday yet mentioned lack of battle sounds or airstrikes.

A woman called Nadra Hamadeh, whose sister, brother-in-law, two family members and her daughter’s husband lost their lives in hostilities, expressed her desire to return from al-Mawasi to Gaza’s northern part quickly to check on her home, that she thinks to be damaged yet remains standing.

“There is deep sorrow for people who sacrificed their families and children and properties … As for us, we look forward to revisiting our dwelling that we were forced to abandon. The emotion continues similar to our essences had been separated from our physical forms at the time of evacuation,” Hamadeh in her fifties commented.

“We desire that the war ends,
