Former President Trump has repeatedly stated he would urge FIFA to remove global soccer tournament events from a designated city based on municipal politics, with Massachusetts now being the third such city to encounter such statements from the US president. Furthermore, Trump suggested he would contemplate parallel steps against LA for the 2028 Olympics due to potential security concerns.
While Trump holds no official jurisdiction to directly relocate either event, he may lobby the organizing committees managing each competition to shift host cities.
These remarks were made during a news conference with Argentina's leader Milei, who was present in the presidential residence following the revelation of a multibillion-dollar rescue package for the Latin American country. At the end of the event, a media member inquired Trump about a recent “street takeover” in the city where authorities were targeted and a police vehicle was ignited. The correspondent also asked if the situation could result in the removal of hosting duties for the expanded World Cup.
“We could take them away,” Trump stated concerning the FIFA World Cup matches, scheduled to be hosted at the Foxborough venue. “The city's leader is ineffective … she is radical left, and activists are taking over areas of the city. It's a significant statement, right?”
Public disruptions, a digitally organized occurrence where groups of people gather on urban roads late at night to perform stunts, have been a frequent nuisance in US urban areas since the coronavirus closures. Current similar events have turned violent in the state, notably in Boston. However, these occurrences are typically not regarded as linked to any distinct ideological group.
“When a city is failing, and I believe exist security risks, I would call Gianni [Infantino], who is phenomenal, and say we should relocate it to a different city,” Trump commented on Tuesday. “He will do that. He wouldn’t love the action, but he’d do it. Without hesitation, he’d do it.”
Gianni Infantino has made no secret his attempts to be closely connected with Trump before the 2026 event, scheduled to be organized in numerous American venues across the United States along with a couple in the northern neighbor and multiple in Mexico. The FIFA president has participated at various Oval Office gatherings, facilitated Trump deliver the club tournament trophy after the championship match, and has even delayed his own organization’s congress to accompany Trump on a trip to the Middle East this year.
Nevertheless, Trump from suggesting the cancellation of soccer events from additional American venues. On September 25, Seattle and San Francisco faced similar criticism, with Trump claiming both locations were “governed by far-left extremists who don’t know what they’re doing,” while questioning the public safety of both locales and implying that events could be relocated.
FIFA vice-president Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s claims when he responded afterward at a event in London.
“It’s FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, we decide such choices,” Montagliani declared. “Respectfully to sitting presidents, soccer is transcends political figures and soccer will survive their administration and their policies. It's the beauty of football, that it is transcends any individual and more important than any country.”
Similarly, Trump’s reply to a question about the Massachusetts city extended to a parallel statement regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“When I believed the city was failing to be sufficiently organized, I'd relocate it to an alternate venue if I had to,” Trump stated. “Regarding that event I may have to obtain a varying approval, but we'd take that action.”
The permission Trump alluded to would must come via the IOC. Their president, the newly elected president, was elected to her position in this year and has so far not hold a public appearance with him, but she said that she desires a discussion with the US figure at a future time.
The former president also questioned Gavin Newsom’s handling of recent California fires, stating that a comparable scenario could cause the cancellation of the Games.
“If Newsom refuses to cooperate, we will have to be firm,” Trump said.
His message was equally direct for Boston.
“They must clean up their act,” Trump stated. “That’s all I will say.”
